Volcanic activity at Mount Semeru increased again on Tuesday (23/6/2026). Based on data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the highest mountain on the island of Java recorded two eruptions within a short period in the morning.
The first eruption occurred precisely at 05:30 WIB, spewing an ash column approximately 1,200 meters above the summit, or around 4,876 meters above sea level. The observed ash material, white to gray in color with medium intensity, moved toward the south.
Less than an hour later, at 06:21 WIB, volcanic activity was detected again. This second eruption produced a lower ash column, around 700 meters above the summit.
Based on seismograph records, the second eruption had a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 134 seconds. Until official reports were issued, authorities continued to monitor the development of the situation on the ground to ensure the safety of residents around the mountain slopes.
