The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Management (BB TNBTS) has officially implemented a closure policy for Mount Semeru's hiking trails. This step was taken to respect the sacred ritual of the 2026 Yadnya Karo Traditional Holiday celebrated by the Tengger Tribe, particularly the residents of Ranupani Village.
According to official statements, the hiking area will be free of tourist activities for 12 days, from August 7 to August 18, 2026. Hiking trails are scheduled to resume normal operations on August 19, 2026, via the online reservation system available on the national park's official website.
Head of BB TNBTS, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, explained that this decision was based on a request from the Ranupani Village Government. He emphasized the importance of providing a peaceful and safe environment for local residents so they can solemnly carry out their ancestral ceremonies without disruption from hiking activities.
For hikers, authorities have set a maximum activity deadline on the hiking trail for Thursday, August 6, 2026. All hikers are required to complete their trip and return to the Ranupani Post by Friday, August 7, 2026, at 16:00 WIB at the latest. The management is also offering solutions for affected hikers with rescheduling options coordinated through officers.
Although the hiking trail is closed, management confirmed that other supporting tourist areas, such as daily tour areas and camping activities at Ranu Regulo, remain open to the public. This policy represents a synergy between national park management and indigenous communities in preserving traditional sanctity while supporting the sustainability of the local tourism sector.
