Indonesia has once again solidified its presence on the international winter sports stage by hosting the prestigious Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy 2026. This world-scale event officially opened on Monday (3/8/2026) at the Oasis Centre Arena, located in AEON Jakarta Garden City, Jakarta. The championship marks a significant milestone for the Executive Board of the Indonesia Ice Skating Federation (PP. FISI) in demonstrating the readiness of the nation's sports infrastructure and management.
This year's edition recorded a significant increase in participation, with 146 athletes from 18 countries across various continents in attendance. Not only was it dominated by Asian representatives such as Japan, Korea, and Chinese Taipei, but the tournament also drew competitors from Australia, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, and the United States. This surge in participant numbers is a drastic increase compared to the 2022 event, which was attended by fewer than 100 athletes.
The Secretary General of the Central National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI), Drs. Tb. Lukman Djajadikusuma, expressed his deep appreciation for the achievements of PP. FISI under the leadership of Suzan Herawati. KONI views the hosting of this high-level championship as crucial for building a sustainable development ecosystem for local athletes. The event is expected to motivate national athletes to compete at higher levels.
Lukman added that this momentum must be fully leveraged to prepare the best talents for future major agendas, including the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia and the long-term goal of qualifying for the 2030 French Alps Winter Olympics. Effective synergy in athletic development is expected to produce figure skaters that Indonesia can be proud of on the global stage.
The Chairperson of PP. FISI, Suzan Herawati, expressed her pride in Indonesia being trusted to host this event for the second time. Despite facing stiff competition from strong nations in ice sports, Suzan remains optimistic about the performance of the 15 athletes representing Indonesia. Her organization is targeting their best performances and podium finishes in several contested categories.
Indonesia's capability as a host is supported by the Olympic-sized ice rink at the Oasis Centre Arena, which meets international standards. This success also drew praise from the President of the Asian Skating Union (ASU), Myong Hi Chang, who called this edition the largest Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy in history, while also strengthening Indonesia's positive image in the eyes of the global sports community.
