The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has set an ambitious target to launch the Nusantara Earth Observation-1 (NEO-1) satellite in January 2027. This project marks a historic milestone for Indonesia, as the entire suite of satellite technology—ranging from mission design and system architecture to ground station operations—is fully and independently developed by local talent.

Head of BRIN, Arif Satria, stated that NEO-1 is a manifestation of end-to-end technology mastery crucial for national research sovereignty. The satellite is expected to provide high-quality satellite imagery to support vital sectors, including spatial mapping, forestry and maritime monitoring, disaster mitigation, and vessel tracking via the Automatic Identification System (AIS).

More than just a technical instrument, the development of NEO-1 is positioned as a strategic national step to transform Indonesia's status from a consumer into a producer of space technology on the global stage. Given Indonesia's geographic location directly on the equator, optimizing research and cross-sectoral collaboration is key to capitalizing on this competitive advantage.

Echoing this sentiment, Director General of Digital Infrastructure at the Ministry of Communication and Digital, Wayan Toni Supriyanto, emphasized that satellites are a strategic infrastructure pillar. The existence of an independent satellite is crucial for strengthening connectivity in frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) regions, as well as supporting information resilience, education, healthcare, and national defense in the future.
