General Chair of Central KONI Emphasizes the Role of Sport Intelligence in Modernizing Sports Achievement

The General Chair of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) Central, Marciano Norman, emphasized that the utilization of sport intelligence has become a crucial need in the modern sports achievement ecosystem. This strategy is considered a transformative step to strengthen the athlete development system amidst tight global competition that currently relies heavily on data analysis and strategic information.

During a book discussion event titled "Sport Intelligence" at the State University of Surabaya (Unesa), Tuesday (7/7/2026), Marciano explained that contemporary sports development is no longer sufficient by relying solely on sport science. According to him, the ability to manage information systematically, map opponents' strengths, and formulate data-driven tactics are the key determinants of victory in the competitive arena.

Marciano, who has a background as the former Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), believes that the intelligence approach can be adapted to the world of sports. He emphasized that today's victory is not merely the result of an athlete's physical endurance, but the result of intelligent and measurable information processing. This step has been initiated since he took office at Central KONI in 2019, involving the role of the media as part of a strategic information-gathering network.

As a concrete manifestation, Central KONI has formed a special unit under the direct coordination of the General Chair to handle the field of sport intelligence. The unit is tasked with mapping weaknesses in development, identifying untapped opportunities, and gathering vital data to be provided to the parent organizations of sports branches.

Furthermore, Marciano hopes that synergy with 14 universities that have sports faculties in Indonesia can become a driving force for the development of research-based training systems. With this more adaptive and measurable approach, he is optimistic that national athletes can have higher competitiveness and achieve brilliant achievements in various world championships.
