Portugal's coach, Roberto Martinez, stated that his players had fought their hardest and were able to match the play of Spain, who are touted as one of the strong title contenders. Martinez felt that the defeat was down to bad luck, especially when his players' attempts struck the crossbar.
"The Portuguese people can be proud of this team's performance. We felt we deserved to take the match to extra time. However, today luck was simply not on our side in what was a very balanced match," Martinez said, as quoted from the official FIFA website.
Echoing his coach, Portugal's star midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, did not hide his disappointment. He highlighted a drop in his team's intensity in the second half, which gave Spain the space to dominate. Fernandes admitted that the tactical decision to defend too deep backfired, costing his team dearly.
"We came with great ambitions, but unfortunately our performance was not at its best. We made the mistake of letting Spain dominate possession in our defensive area. If we had remained consistent like in the first half, the final result could have been different," Fernandes said.
