The Class IIA Batam Correctional Institution (Lapas) officially commenced the Inmates' Sports Week (Porsenap) on Friday (July 31, 2026). The event, which brings together inmate representatives from various housing blocks, is held to celebrate the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia and to strengthen personality development programs.
The opening ceremony, which took place vibrantly on the Batam Prison field, was led directly by the Warden (Kalapas) of Batam Prison, Yosafat Rizanto. The symbolic opening was marked by the release of balloons into the air, greeted with cheers and enthusiasm by hundreds of inmates crowding the field area.
In his address, Yosafat Rizanto emphasized that Porsenap is not just a physical competition event, but an important instrument to build the character of the inmates. Through sports, they are taught the values of sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and togetherness, which are expected to be applied in their daily lives during their rehabilitation period.
This year's Porsenap features six popular sports: futsal, volleyball, badminton, sepak takraw, chess, and dominoes. The entire series of matches is scheduled to take place gradually under the strict supervision of prison officers to ensure smoothness, safety, and order.
This momentum was also used by the Warden to remind inmates about the upcoming Independence Day General Remission. Yosafat urged the inmates to continue showing good behavior and adhering to the rules so that their right to remission can be fulfilled in accordance with the applicable administrative and substantive regulations.
Through positive activities like Porsenap, Batam Prison is committed to creating a conducive, harmonious, and productive rehabilitation atmosphere. This step is expected to shape independent and well-behaved inmates, preparing them to reintegrate and contribute positively to society at large.
