The Mount Raung hiking tourist area via the classic route of Sumberwringin Village, Bondowoso Regency, East Java, has experienced a drastic surge in visitors. During the holiday period, the number of hikers rose up to threefold compared to usual days, jumping from dozens to hundreds of people each week.
Standing at 3,332 meters above sea level, this mountain continues to be a magnet for hikers, both domestic visitors from various provinces in Indonesia—including Papua and Sulawesi—and foreign tourists. The popularity of Raung as part of Java Island's Seven Summits and the beauty of the Raung Crater Caldera serve as the main attractions for adventurers choosing either camping or day-hike (tek-tok) styles.
In response to this increase, trail management has tightened the enforcement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Mitigation steps such as thorough health checks and mandatory safety briefings must be conducted before hikers begin their journey, ensuring the physical condition of every hiker, especially beginners with a history of certain illnesses.
Head of Sumberwringin District, Probo Nugroho, revealed that this hiking boom has provided a fresh breath of air for the local economy. Various service sectors, ranging from motorcycle taxis (ojek) to the Pondok Motor post, tour guide services, to local homestays, recorded significant revenue increases over the weekend.
Despite the growing economic potential, authorities continue to urge hikers to constantly monitor the mountain's volcanic condition, which tends to fluctuate. Active coordination with volcano observation post officials is a mandatory requirement for hikers to prioritize safety while engaging in activities within the conservation area.
