Cybercriminals are reportedly increasingly exploiting viral trends on various social media platforms with high engagement rates. This strategy is used to lure internet users into online gambling ecosystems and other fraudulent schemes.
Kaspersky's Country Manager for Indonesia, Defi Nofitra, revealed that online gambling is just one of many guises used by cybercriminals. They often embed malicious links (phishing) or trigger downloads of fake applications specifically designed to steal personal information and drain the financial accounts of unsuspecting users.
The high intensity of digital activities among Indonesians makes the country a fertile ground for such crimes. Defi emphasized that blocking content alone is not enough to curb this threat. A comprehensive approach is needed, prioritizing cybersecurity aspects and strengthening digital trust in society.
According to him, the long-term solution to this issue lies in multi-sectoral collaboration. Synergy between the government, digital platform operators, industry players, and educational institutions is crucial to building a more resilient and secure internet ecosystem.
