Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani emphasized the urgency of enhancing economic cooperation between Indonesia and India, focusing not only on trade volume but also on strengthening industrial added value. She made these remarks during an official speech welcoming the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (7/7/2026).
According to Puan, the strategic partnership between the two countries must be directed toward a more progressive economic transformation through industrial downstreaming, technology transfer, and the strengthening of regional supply chains. She stated that the DPR RI is fully committed to supporting the creation of a transparent, healthy, and mutually beneficial investment climate for both parties.
Furthermore, Puan expressed optimism that through innovative collaboration, Indonesia and India will enter a new phase of a more balanced bilateral relationship. She hopes this step will provide concrete benefits for the long-term welfare of the people in both countries.
In addition to the economic sector, Puan highlighted the role of Indonesia and India as two major pillars of democracy and key maritime powers in the Indian Ocean region. For her, both nations hold a collective responsibility to maintain regional stability amid the uncertainty of current global geopolitical dynamics.
Complementing government diplomacy, Puan underlined the crucial role of parliamentary diplomacy. Through inter-parliamentary dialogue, she believes both nations can expand mutual understanding, strengthen political trust, and safeguard various strategic agendas at both bilateral and multilateral levels under the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
