President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held intensive bilateral talks at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday (7/7/2026). The meeting marks a concrete step by both nations in bolstering diplomatic ties through collaboration agreements spanning a spectrum of strategic issues, from regional security to future technology sectors.
In the security sector, both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to tackling the threats of terrorism and transnational crime. This effort will be reinforced through the hosting of the third Indonesia-India Security Dialogue as well as the capacity development of digital infrastructure. Prabowo emphasized the importance of a collective response in facing increasingly dynamic global security challenges.
The aspect of cross-border connectivity was a main highlight during the discussions. Indonesia and India agreed to synergize the development of Sabang Port in Aceh with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This project is projected to become a strategic hub capable of boosting trade flows and people-to-people interactions between the two countries more effectively.
In the economic sphere, both countries committed to accelerating negotiations on the *Indonesia-India Preferential Trade Agreement* and reviewing the trade agreement within the ASEAN-India framework (*AITIGA*). Additionally, an innovative QR-based cross-border payment system will soon be implemented to increase financial transaction efficiency while strengthening the national economic resilience of each nation.
Furthermore, the energy and health sectors also serve as crucial pillars in this partnership. Indonesia and India agreed to collaborate on solar power plant projects and share nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. In the health sector, the main focus is directed at improving the capacity of medical personnel, including doctors and nurses, through knowledge exchange and professional training.
