Tech giant Microsoft is reportedly undergoing a major restructuring of its gaming division, directly impacting operations at Obsidian Entertainment. The Irvine, California-based development studio has now been tasked with focusing on the latest entry in the popular Fallout franchise, following the company's decision to cancel the development of an Avowed sequel as well as several unannounced projects.
This strategic move is part of a broader business efficiency effort led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. As a consequence of the organizational restructuring, Obsidian Entertainment was forced to lay off up to 25 percent of its workforce. This new focus marks a shift in Xbox's priorities toward optimizing intellectual properties with established fan bases and proven market success.
Under the newly established leadership structure, Obsidian Design Director Josh Sawyer has been appointed to lead the Fallout project. This decision aligns with Microsoft's intent to maximize the potential of the Fallout franchise, whose popularity has surged again thanks to the television series adaptation and consistent player numbers in Fallout 76, which has recorded over 23 million active users to date.
This policy also serves as a continuation of Xbox's organizational downsizing plans, which include the layoff of 3,200 employees across its gaming division. By halting secondary projects, Microsoft aims to concentrate its investment resources on core franchises deemed to have more stable commercial performance and long-term appeal.
