Volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait has reportedly experienced a drastic increase in intensity over the past week. A series of eruptions occurring from July 2 to July 5, 2026, has forced authorities to raise the volcano's alert level from Level II (Advisory) to Level III (Alert).
Data from the Volcano Monitoring Post indicates that the consecutive eruptions spewed ash and volcanic material 10 to 200 meters above the summit. Beyond visual phenomena, seismic sensors also recorded an increase in continuous tremor activity with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters, indicating magmatic movement deep within the volcano.
As an anticipatory measure, a joint team consisting of BPBD, Basarnas, and the South Lampung Fire and Rescue Service (Damkarmat) is now on full alert at the Hargo Pancuran Village Monitoring Post. This step aims to ensure rapid mitigation coordination, particularly in formulating evacuation plans for coastal communities should conditions worsen.
Head of Division at South Lampung Damkarmat, Rully Fikriansyah, urged the public to remain calm and not be swayed by unverified information. He emphasized the importance of referring to official channels regarding the volcano's activity developments.
Echoing these sentiments, Head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Monitoring Post, Suwarno, explained that although the current series of eruptions is part of a volcanic activity phase, vigilance must remain at its maximum. Authorities issued a strict warning for tourists and fishermen to refrain from any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the crater to avoid the risk of ejected hot materials and toxic gas hazards.
