A comprehensive study from the University of Adelaide offers new hope for those attempting to overcome nicotine addiction. Published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, the study reveals that structured physical activity is an effective, affordable, and impactful supportive method in reducing cigarette consumption.

Analyzing 59 randomized controlled trials involving more than 9,000 participants, researchers found strong evidence regarding the effectiveness of exercise. The results show that individuals who exercise actively have a 15 percent higher chance of achieving sustained abstinence and are 21 percent more likely to successfully refrain from smoking in the past seven days compared to the control group.

Physiologically, a single session of physical exercise is proven to curb smoking cravings for at least 30 minutes post-activity. On average, participating in an exercise program helps individuals reduce cigarette consumption by up to two cigarettes per day. These findings offer a breath of fresh air, considering smoking remains one of the leading causes of premature death worldwide, claiming seven million lives annually according to WHO data.

Despite the positive impact, Professor Carol Maher, senior researcher on the study, emphasized that exercise should be viewed as a complementary therapy. This strategy needs to be integrated with proven medical methods, such as counseling and pharmacological therapy, to achieve optimal results.

Moving forward, researchers still need to conduct deeper testing on the effectiveness of exercise within the context of public health program implementation. Additionally, the potential of physical activity to help electronic cigarette or vape users quit their habit represents an urgent area for further research.
