A solemn atmosphere enveloped the Mount Gombak area in Nglarangan Village, Kauman District, Ponorogo Regency, on Sunday (12/7/2026). Approximately 7,000 pilgrims climbed the dry mountain slopes to recite prayers and dhikr at the tomb of Tumenggung Brotonegoro, the figure known as the first Regent of Ponorogo.
This annual tradition, coinciding with the momentum of Muharram, was initiated by pilgrims from Sewulan Village, Madiun Regency, as a way to continue the spiritual mandate of the late KH Makruf Nawawi. The group, escorted by security forces and Banser, undertook the climbing route with full humility of heart, distancing themselves from the hustle and bustle of worldly celebrations for an inner journey.
For the participants, this climb holds a deep meaning. In addition to offering personal prayers, ranging from health to financial ease, this pilgrimage is considered an important moment for self-reflection, shedding arrogance, and strengthening the bonds of kinship that are beginning to be eroded by the currents of modernity.
KH Afif Nizam, as the successor of the tradition and son of KH Makruf Nawawi, emphasized that the exemplary character of Tumenggung Brotonegoro is the core of this agenda. The spirit of humility of the Regent, who was known to be egalitarian and modest despite holding a high office, is believed to be a valuable heritage that must continue to be preserved by the next generation.
Closing the series of events, thousands of pilgrims collectively offered prayers for the nation's safety and the hope for the birth of trustworthy leaders. This pilgrimage to the peak of Mount Gombak confirms that amidst the fast pace of the times, preserving spiritual roots and historical examples remains a crucial need for society to find inner peace.
