The Vietnamese government has officially designated artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor technology as key pillars in boosting national economic growth. This ambitious step has received full support from the World Economic Forum (WEF), which assesses that Vietnam has great potential to break into the ranks of the world's 20 largest economies thanks to advancements in its technological capabilities.
During a bilateral meeting between Minister Vu Hai Quan and WEF Managing Director Maroun Kairouz, concrete strategies to strengthen Vietnam's digital competitiveness were discussed. Kairouz reaffirmed the WEF's commitment to supporting the adoption of AI technology across various industrial sectors, which is expected to serve as a catalyst for domestic efficiency and innovation.
Minister Vu Hai Quan explained that AI development in Vietnam currently faces both challenges and strategic opportunities, particularly regarding the attraction of global talent, data interoperability, and the reinforcement of hardware infrastructure such as graphics processing units (GPUs). The Vietnamese government hopes that the WEF's expert network can provide technical guidance to overcome these hurdles.
As part of their ongoing cooperation, both parties agreed to officially sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) soon. This agreement will serve as an operational framework for the development of the AI ecosystem, enhancing digital capabilities for the MSME sector, and strategic coordination to ensure the success of the upcoming APEC 2027 event.
