The modern history of the Iranian military has entered a new chapter in its efforts to localize the defense industry. Amid various embargo challenges, the Army Research and Self-Sufficiency Jihad Organization successfully perfected the Zulfiqar 3, a main battle tank that has now become the pride of their domestic defense industry.
The development of the Zulfiqar 3 represents the accumulation of a long evolution within the Zulfiqar tank line. Unlike its predecessors, this model features a pentagonal turret design resembling the M1 Abrams tank. The advantages of this design are reinforced by the use of advanced composite armor, replacing reliance on conventional explosive reactive armor (ERA), to provide more optimal protection against modern anti-tank missile threats.
In terms of performance, the Zulfiqar 3 is armed with a precise 125mm caliber cannon. A 1,000-horsepower diesel engine enables the tank to reach speeds of up to 72 kilometers per hour on flat terrain. Furthermore, operational efficiency is enhanced by reducing the crew size to three personnel, thanks to the integration of an autoloader system and state-of-the-art fire control technology.
Protection features were a top priority in the design of this tank. The Zulfiqar 3 is equipped with an NBC protection system to filter out chemical, biological, and nuclear threats, as well as thermal camouflage netting to reduce enemy infrared detection. The inclusion of a 360-degree closed-circuit camera system also provides better situational awareness for the crew on the battlefield.
With the integration of a laser rangefinder system and shallow water maneuvering capabilities, the Zulfiqar 3 proves that Iran is capable of combining international design elements with indigenous technological innovation. This project underlines Iran's position as a regional power capable of producing major weapon systems independently and competitively.
