Mount Merapi, located on the border between the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java, showed significant volcanic activity again on Wednesday (8/7/2026). The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) reported the occurrence of pyroclastic flows heading toward the southwest sector, specifically in the upper reaches of the Sat and Putih Rivers.
Based on seismic data, the pyroclastic flow was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 65.29 mm and lasted for 171.01 seconds. The travel distance was observed to reach 2 kilometers from the peak of the mountain. To date, authorities are still conducting intensive monitoring to evaluate the direct impact of the event around the slopes of Merapi.
Prior to this incident, BPPTKG also recorded similar activity during the observation period from 06:00 to 12:00 WIB. At that time, pyroclastic flows slid toward the Boyong River for the same distance. Today's volcanic activity was also characterized by dozens of avalanche earthquakes, hybrid earthquakes, and lava flows heading toward the Krasak River.
Currently, the status of Mount Merapi remains at Level III (Alert). The public is urged not to carry out any activities in the designated danger zones, especially along the river channels originating from Mount Merapi, and to always follow official instructions from local governments to anticipate further hazards.
