The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS) has announced a temporary closure of the Mount Semeru climbing route. This step is being taken to show respect for the traditional ritual of Karo Day, which will take place from August 7 to 18, 2026.
The decision is outlined in an official announcement letter issued by the national park management. The closure is a follow-up to a request from the Ranupani Village Government in Lumajang, aiming to maintain the solemnity of the local community as they carry out their annual traditional worship rituals.
According to the applicable regulations, the last climbers will be allowed to start their journey on August 6, 2026. All climbers within the 3,676-meter-high mountain area are required to descend immediately and complete their activities no later than August 7, 2026, at 16:00 WIB.
For climbers affected by this policy—especially those who already have scheduled climbs but fall within the closure period—TNBTS is providing a rescheduling facility. Information regarding the rescheduling process will be sent directly via WhatsApp to the group leader registered in the online reservation system on the official website bromotenggersemeru.id.
Although the main climbing route is closed, the management emphasized that the tourist area and the Ranu Regulo camping area remain open to the public. The authority urges all tourism service providers and visitors to comply with these regulations to ensure the smooth conduct of the Tengger community's traditional activities in the area.
