IPB University is accelerating the development of cutting-edge technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) and high-resolution satellite imagery to detect nutrient deficiencies in oil palm plants. This innovative step is expected to provide plantation maintenance recommendations that are far more precise and accurate compared to conventional methods.
Head of the International Research Institute (LRI) for Advanced Technology at IPB University, Prof. Anas Miftah Fauzi, explained that this collaboration aims to shift the monitoring paradigm. Moving from previous reliance on manual field observations, it is now transforming to utilize spatial data analysis and artificial intelligence for efficiency in the agroforestry sector.
This strategic project is carried out through a partnership with PT Dabeeo Artificial Intelligence Indonesia, a South Korean tech company. The new system is designed not only to measure nutrient sufficiency, but also to detect early symptoms of disease attacks on oil palm plants.
The presence of this innovation is projected to strengthen the "Precipalm" ecosystem, a leaf image analysis technology for oil palm fertilization recommendations previously successfully released by IPB University. The support of Dabeeo's satellite technology is considered crucial as it possesses ultra-high-resolution imaging capabilities down to a detail of 30 centimeters.
In addition to high resolution, this monitoring technology is equipped with features for tree density analysis, canopy cover, and historical change detection to regularly monitor vegetation dynamics. These advanced capabilities are supported by plantation-specific satellite operations and access to Dabeeo's other supporting satellites.
This cooperation was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by both parties in Jakarta. In this partnership, Dabeeo is committed to providing full support, including facilitating funding for satellite image data acquisition needs during the research.
