Two British Royal Navy F-35 stealth fighter jets reportedly intercepted a Russian Bear-F maritime patrol aircraft in the Norwegian Sea region. This decisive action was taken after the Russian aircraft was detected flying too low and approaching the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, which was executing a NATO mission, in an unsafe manner.
The British Ministry of Defence revealed that the Russian aircraft dropped ten sonobuoys—sensor devices used to detect submarines—into the surrounding waters. Despite repeated attempts to contact them on international frequencies, the Russian crew reportedly gave no response, prompting the deployment of the fighter jets to escort them away from the aircraft carrier strike group.
This incident heightens tensions amid warnings from British military officials that security threats are currently at their highest level since the Cold War era. British Defence Minister Dan Jarvis emphasized the importance of NATO's presence in the region as a preventive measure against Russian provocations, which are seen as increasingly aggressive across various domains ranging from sea to cyberspace.
