The major fire that has engulfed the Jatiwaringin Landfill (TPA) in Tangerang Regency since June 30, 2026, has captured public attention. The incident is reported to have burned at least 15 hectares of the waste accumulation area, which daily receives thousands of tons of domestic waste.
Health impacts have become a major concern following reports of an increase in Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) cases around the incident site. Health experts warn that exposure to large-scale waste burning smoke not only triggers ARI but also risks worsening the health conditions of patients with a history of bronchial asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Based on scientific studies, smoke from waste fires contains hazardous gases such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and microscopic PM2.5 particles that can penetrate deep into the respiratory tract. Furthermore, the burning of plastic materials in waste piles risks releasing toxic chemical compounds such as dioxins, which are carcinogenic.
Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and pregnant women, are urged to be more vigilant about this air pollution. Comprehensive medical management is highly needed, not only limited to mild symptoms but also encompassing long-term monitoring of respiratory illness patterns in the affected population.
Health experts suggest that the government consider integrating cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, to improve the effectiveness of identifying, monitoring, and mitigating waste fires in the future. Scientific data-based mitigation measures are key to preventing wider health impacts in the community.
