The global 3D printing industry is recording significant growth, with market value projected to reach tens of billions of dollars by 2025. While the technology's ease in producing complex components brings widespread innovation, on the flip side, it poses a serious security threat regarding the production of untraceable homemade firearms, commonly known as 'ghost guns'.
In response to these concerns, two of the most populous states in the United States, California and New York, are currently drafting strict regulations. Through Bill AB 2047 and related rules, local authorities aim to require 3D printer manufacturers to embed automatic detection technology capable of recognizing and canceling print orders for firearm components.
The proposed mechanism works by comparing the design data intended for printing against a digital database of weapon components. If the software detects a match, the printer will automatically reject the instruction. The implementation of this technology is scheduled to begin across various printing device models as early as 2029.
Although this initiative is viewed as a crucial step by lawmakers, technical experts have raised criticisms regarding its effectiveness. Many argue that this regulation could potentially serve merely as a political response rather than a truly viable technical solution. Given the massive adoption of 3D printers ranging from household to industrial scales, the debate over balancing technological freedom and security control is expected to remain a long-term challenge in the future.
