The Class IIA Labuhan Ruku Correctional Institution (Lapas) in Batu Bara Regency officially kicked off the Sports Week event to welcome the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. The activity, centered at the prison's sports field, was officially opened by the Head of the Prison, Hamdi Hasibuan, on Saturday (1/8/2026).
The opening ceremony was enthusiastically attended by structural officials, staff, and all inmates. This annual agenda is designed not just as a physical competition, but as part of a personality development program to foster discipline, sportsmanship, and a sense of togetherness within the prison environment.
In his speech, the Head of Labuhan Ruku Prison, Hamdi Hasibuan, emphasized that the celebration of independence day must be interpreted as a momentum to emulate the struggle of the nation's heroes. These values of never giving up and unity are what they want to instill in the inmates through various sports matches.
"This sports competition becomes a strategic platform in building the character of the inmates. We hope this activity can build mutual respect, strengthen family spirit, and rekindle the spirit of nationalism in their hearts," said Hamdi.
The opening of the activity was symbolically marked by the first kick of the ball by the Head of the Prison in the middle of the field. This step marked the beginning of a series of matches, which immediately opened with a futsal tournament between inmates. The atmosphere of the match was lively, filled with cheers from supporters who still maintained order.
In addition to futsal, several other sports will also be contested involving collaboration between officers and inmates. Through these recreational yet educational activities, Labuhan Ruku Prison is committed to preparing inmates to have a better mentality, discipline, and be ready to reintegrate into society after their sentences are served.
