The West Aceh Regency Government has expressed full support for the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) in firmly rejecting dominoes from being categorized as a sport branch in Aceh Province. This stance is emphasized as a preventive measure to safeguard social values within the community.
The Regent of West Aceh, Tarmizi, stated that his region's position is absolute. Even if KONI Aceh were to change its decision in the future, the West Aceh Regency Government would remain consistent in opposing dominoes as an official sport within its administrative jurisdiction.
This decision is backed by strong reasons. Tarmizi explained that social realities in West Aceh show that dominoes are often played around the clock, both day and night. This raises serious concerns about the neglect of family duties and a decline in community productivity.
As a concrete commitment, the West Aceh Regency Government has issued an official instruction to all government apparatuses prohibiting involvement in domino games. This move is reinforced by outreach and enforcement efforts targeting various coffee shops—popular community gathering spots—to curb the widespread activity.
