The Indonesian government continues to strengthen synergy with Russia in the maritime sector through a forum titled Building an Indonesia-Russia Shipbuilding Partnership. This strategic meeting was held at the Indonesian Pavilion during the prestigious industrial technology exhibition, INNOPROM 2026, taking place in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
This collaboration is designed as a platform for industry players from both countries to explore new investment opportunities, facilitate technology transfer, enhance human resource competencies, and initiate joint production. These efforts are expected to boost the competitiveness of national shipyards while expanding market penetration into the Southeast Asian (ASEAN) region.
Indonesian Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, stated that this cooperation represents an important momentum to enhance the capacity of the domestic shipbuilding industry. With technological expertise support from Russia, Indonesia aims to accelerate the modernization of maritime manufacturing and strengthen local supply chains.
This business meeting is a concrete follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on shipbuilding cooperation agreed upon by both countries in December 2025. Opportunities for collaboration are believed to open even wider alongside plans to implement the Indonesia-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement (I-EAEU FTA) in the future.
As the world's largest archipelagic state, Indonesia has a very high demand for vessel fleets to support smooth logistics distribution, inter-island connectivity, the fisheries sector, and offshore energy operations. On the other hand, Russia is known for its strong global reputation in maritime engineering, commercial vessel design, and advanced propulsion system technology that can complement Indonesia's needs.
Director General of Resilience, Territorial, and International Industrial Access at the Ministry of Industry, Tri Supondy, added that Indonesia offers a highly potential market with growing industrial capacity. This synergy is expected to yield concrete, mutually beneficial projects soon, while solidifying Indonesia's position as one of the main maritime manufacturing hubs in Southeast Asia.
