PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGEO) is expanding its business line by maximizing geothermal energy potential beyond the conventional electricity sector. This strategic move is realized through the development of direct use applications to support the industrial and agricultural sectors, as well as the production of green hydrogen as a future clean energy alternative.
Director of Operations at PGEO, Andi Joko Nugroho, explained that geothermal energy possesses high flexibility that has not yet been fully tapped. At The 5th ITB International Geothermal Workshop 2026, he emphasized that the company's current focus is to accelerate technological innovation and expand non-electric geothermal utilization through cross-sector collaboration.
In addition to energy diversification, PGEO is also adopting digital transformation to improve operational efficiency. One of the steps taken is the development of well testing technology to generate more precise operational data, which is expected to speed up field decision-making processes.
Indonesia currently holds a geothermal potential of 24 gigawatts (GW), placing the country second in global reserves. Capitalizing on this geographical advantage, PGEO aims to increase its self-managed geothermal power generation capacity to 1 GW by 2028, with targets projected to jump to 1.8 GW by 2034.
