SMAN 2 Tenggarong has now transformed into one of the breeding grounds for potential young athletes in East Kalimantan. Through the Special Sports Class (KKO) program, which has been running for the past two years, the school has successfully nurtured talented individuals who are ready to compete at various championship levels.
Yuni Erliyani, Vice Principal for Student Affairs at SMAN 2 Tenggarong, explained that the presence of the KKO program greatly facilitates the school in preparing competition delegations. The coached students are not only physically prepared but also mentally mature for competition. Evidently, the school recently achieved success in the badminton branch at the provincial National Student Sports Olympiad (O2SN) and dominated the swimming podium at the Kaltim Open 2026.
Despite excelling in the sports sector, SMAN 2 Tenggarong maintains a balance of achievements in arts and sciences. In the National Student Art and Literature Festival (FLS3N), school representatives won titles in the female solo monologue and short story writing categories. In the academic field, their students also achieved brilliant results in the National Science Olympiad (OSN) for Geography and Chemistry.
The synergy of these achievements is inseparable from the active role of the alumni association, including figures like Sarkowi V Zahry. The alumni provide continuous career guidance to their juniors. Students with academic achievements are directed to continue their studies at Mulawarman University, while those who stand out in sports are encouraged to pursue higher education in the sports department of IKIP PGRI.
The success of this integrated program has had a direct impact on the soaring number of new applicants for the 2026-2027 academic year. The school recorded a record enrollment of 456 new students divided into 12 study groups. This surge in interest is a strong indicator of the growing trust of the Kutai Kartanegara community in the quality of education at SMAN 2 Tenggarong.
