PT Info Media Digital or Tempo Digital officially launched a new strategic business line as of July 1, 2026. This move positions Tempo as a provider of journalistic content and data specifically aimed at the development of artificial intelligence (AI) platforms and related technology companies.

This strategy is implemented through a two-way approach. Tempo has begun blocking AI bots that have been scraping and archiving content without permission. Alternatively, the company provides an official access route for third parties to obtain data transparently, measurably, and through a legal, paid mechanism.

Tempo Media Group's Digital Transformation Director, Wahyu Dhyatmika, emphasized that this policy does not aim to hinder technological progress. Instead, this step is taken to ensure that AI innovation grows in a healthy information ecosystem and guarantees proper economic appreciation for producers of journalistic work.

This initiative comes as a response to a 33.5 percent decline in website traffic throughout 2025. This phenomenon was triggered by changes in audience behavior, which now relies more on AI-based search engines and generative chatbots. As a result, the programmatic advertising revenue of national media has faced significant economic pressure.

To implement this policy, Tempo Digital's Chief Technology Officer, Heru Tjatur Tjahja, stated that bot blocking will be carried out gradually. AI bots will eventually be directed to the official OpenMined channel if they wish to utilize Tempo's content for language model training purposes.

This program is part of a collaboration with the Indonesian Cyber Media Association (AMSI), supported by the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM). In addition to Tempo, media outlets such as Hukumonline and Republika are also involved as pilot projects in collaboration with the Sahabat.AI platform.

Furthermore, Tempo urges the strengthening of regulations through the revision of the Copyright Law. This is deemed crucial so that the use of content for AI model training, copying, and data summarization by automated systems must be subject to licensing and compensation mechanisms regulated by law to maintain the sustainability of the press industry and the quality of democracy in Indonesia.
