President Prabowo Subianto led a strategic meeting at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Sunday (31/8/2025), alongside leaders of state institutions and chairpersons of political parties. This high-level discussion was convened as a responsive measure by the government regarding the ongoing wave of demonstrations in various regions across Indonesia.
Several key national figures attended the meeting, including Indonesia's 5th President and PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri, as well as coalition party leaders such as Bahlil Lahadalia, Zulkifli Hasan, Surya Dharma Paloh, and Muhaimin Iskandar. Additionally, legislative leaders, namely Speaker of the MPR Ahmad Muzani, Speaker of the DPR Puan Maharani, and Speaker of the DPD Sultan Bachtiar Najamudin, contributed their views during this consolidation forum.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the commitment of party leaders to take strict disciplinary action against council members deemed to have committed misconduct in their duties. Concrete steps include revoking the DPR membership of problematic cadres, effective September 1, 2025.
Beyond personal sanctions, the DPR also committed to adjusting internal policies. Important points to be realized include revising DPR members' allowance amounts and imposing a moratorium on overseas working visits, as an expression of empathy for current social conditions.
President Prabowo emphasized the importance of representatives' sensitivity in capturing public aspirations. While guaranteeing the protection of freedom of expression under Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Law No. 9 of 1998, the President stressed that any expression of aspirations must be conducted peacefully and orderly.
