The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenpar) emphasized the strategic role of sports tourism or sport tourism as a powerful catalyst in promoting tourist destinations while stimulating local economic growth. These events, which can gather large crowds, are deemed highly cost-effective with a significant economic impact.

The Principal Expert of Tourism and Creative Economy (Adyatama) at the Ministry, Vinsensius Jemandu, stated that sporting events are capable of reviving the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) sector in the hosting regions. Furthermore, the mobility of inter-regional tourists attending these events acts as a driving force for dynamic economic circulation.

The government continues to encourage every tourist destination in Indonesia to integrate wellness activities or wellness tourism. Post-pandemic, public health awareness has transformed into a lifestyle, positioning sport tourism as a high-quality tourism product.

Data shows a shift in tourist preferences. While culture- and nature-based tourism products previously dominated, the artificial tourism segment (man-made), such as running events and other fitness activities, has seen its contribution rise by up to 20 percent. This trend is expected to increase tourist spending and boost national foreign exchange reserves.

Vinsensius added that this positive phenomenon is also visible in the behavioral changes among Indonesia's younger generation. Today, more young people are shifting from simply hanging out in cafes to becoming active participants in various sports events. This shift in mindset is considered a strong indicator that the sports tourism ecosystem has a bright future in the country.
