Entering the crucial phase leading up to the XVI West Sumatra Provincial Sports Week (Porprov) 2026, the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) of Sawahlunto City has reaffirmed its commitment to providing full support to the local National Sports Committee (KONI). This tactical step was taken to ensure that athletes' readiness is not hindered by operational budget constraints or achievement bonuses.
This commitment emerged during a strategic working meeting held by Commission I of the Sawahlunto City DPRD along with regional government officials and KONI in the DPRD Meeting Room on Monday (27/7/2026). This important meeting was led directly by the Chairman of Commission I of the DPRD, Ronny Eka Putra, and attended by DPRD Chairperson Susi Haryati and Deputy Chairperson II Elfia Rita Dewi to finalize preparations ahead of the sports event which will take place from October 2 to 14, 2026.
On this occasion, the General Chairperson of KONI Sawahlunto, H. Jhon Reflita, presented a progress report on the athlete training camp that has been running since January 2026. Through strict selection and measurable physical tests, KONI decided to send an efficient but competitive force, consisting of 230 athletes, 65 coaches, and 70 supporting officials who will compete in 12 host regencies and cities.
Jhon also proposed the importance of adding a special budget for bonuses or rewards for medal-winning athletes. According to him, decent financial appreciation is a concrete form of recognition for the dedication and sweat sacrificed by the athletes to defend the honor of the "Coal City" (Kota Arang) at the provincial level.
Chairman of Commission I of the DPRD, Ronny Eka Putra, responded positively to the proposal and emphasized that the budget must not be a barrier to regional sports achievements. He stated that the legislature is ready to stand behind the athletes' struggle so they can focus on training and competing with peace of mind without worrying about their rights.
Echoing this, DPRD Chairperson Susi Haryati reminded that Porprov is not just a medal-hunting event, but a representation of the region's dignity and pride in the regional arena. Meanwhile, DPRD Deputy Chairperson II Elfia Rita Dewi emphasized the importance of maximizing local talent in the contingent, while hoping that the nurturing of native Sawahlunto athletes continues to be a top priority for the sustainability of sports achievements in the future.
