The Makassar City Government is taking progressive steps to revamp its increasingly complex urban waste management. Through a working visit to Bali, a delegation from the Makassar City Government studied the modern technology-based waste treatment system of PT Enviro Mas Sejahtera in Denpasar as a strategic reference.
Deputy Mayor of Makassar, Aliyah Mustika Ilham, who led the group alongside the Head of the Environmental Office (DLH) Helmy Budiman, emphasized that conventional methods are no longer sufficient to address the challenge of increasing waste volumes. Therefore, adopting technological innovation is considered the most efficient and environmentally friendly solution.
During the meeting, the team from the Makassar City Government directly reviewed the SOMYA Digester technology developed by Agung Ngurah Panji Astika. This technology is claimed to accelerate the decomposition of organic waste with high efficiency, a solution deemed highly relevant for conditions in Makassar where organic waste accounts for the largest proportion of municipal waste.
Data from the Makassar Environmental Office shows that organic waste accounts for around 56 to 60 percent of total daily waste volume. Head of DLH Helmy Budiman stated that adopting technology is an urgent necessity to reduce the load on landfills (TPA) and accelerate the overall waste processing cycle.
The Makassar City Government is now committed to evaluating the results of the visit to formulate adaptive technical policies. The hope is that integrating this waste treatment technology will not only create better environmental cleanliness but also support Makassar's vision as a sustainable and healthy city for all residents.
