Alfa-Bank, Russia's largest private bank, is currently finalizing its strategic plan to expand into the crypto asset sector. This move includes providing trading, storage, and custody services for digital assets, which will be implemented as soon as the national legal framework for cryptocurrencies is officially approved by the government.
Chief Operating Officer of Corporate and Investment Business at Alfa-Bank, Dmitry Vitman, revealed that the company's primary focus is building an independent digital repository. This system is designed as a storage and registration institution for digital financial assets capable of closely monitoring transaction activities, including blocking transfers to digital wallets that are not verified by regulators.
The development of these services is scheduled for a phased rollout, starting with brokerage services for retail investors through domestic and international infrastructure. Although the regulations are targeted to take effect in September 2026, the bank expects that liquidity and volume in the Russian crypto market will only show significant growth towards the end of 2027.
In addition to Alfa-Bank, the push to adopt digital assets is also being pursued by other major banking institutions such as T-Technologies Group, VTB Bank, and Sberbank. Sberbank, the most aggressive player, even targets the integration of crypto asset services directly into their banking application ecosystem to facilitate self-service transactions for customers.
All of these expansion plans by Russian banks heavily depend on the passage of the draft bill "On Digital Currency and Digital Rights". The regulations, which are currently in the legislative process in parliament, are expected to provide legal certainty for crypto exchanges and digital custodians to operate legally within the Russian financial market.
