The School Environment Orientation Period (MPLS) in Banyuwangi, East Java, was filled with educational activities crucial for residents' safety. Hundreds of new students attending schools on the slopes of Mount Raung were given a deep understanding of disaster mitigation and active volcano characteristics to enhance early preparedness.
This anticipatory measure was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Songgon, among other schools. The students appeared enthusiastic as they listened to presentations from the Mount Raung Volcano Observation Post (PPGA) officers, who delivered the material interactively and tailored to their age group.
PPGA Raung officer, Mukijo, explained that the educational content focused on understanding volcanic characteristics, self-rescue steps during eruptions, and emergency evacuation procedures. Through this briefing, students are expected to understand the quick and appropriate actions required if Mount Raung's volcanic activity suddenly escalates.
The participation of PPGA Raung in the MPLS program marks a first-time initiative directly requested by the school administration. In addition to SMPN 1 Songgon, a similar socialization event was held for new students at SMK Muhammadiyah 9 Gambiran. The PPGA Raung team has routinely conducted periodic disaster awareness sessions for the general public and educational institutions outside of school schedules.
Throughout the session, student engagement was evident from the numerous questions asked. They inquired about the reasons for the high number of volcanoes on Java Island, safe hiking procedures, and where to evacuate during emergency situations. This high level of curiosity serves as a key asset in instilling a disaster-conscious culture among the youth in disaster-prone areas.
