Amid the rapid development of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, technology-based investment instruments are showing promising performance. One investment product, the SPDR NYSE Technology ETF (XNTK), has reportedly successfully outperformed its main rival, the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), over the past year. XNTK's success is driven by a portfolio management strategy that differs from conventional indices.

Based on recent performance data, XNTK posted a significant return of 51.65 percent. This figure far exceeds QQQ's achievement, which only recorded a return of 28.43 percent over the same period. This striking difference stems from XNTK's policy of applying an equal-weight method to its approximately 35 major technology stocks, enabling it to absorb gains from various subsectors more evenly through quarterly rebalancing.

In contrast, QQQ uses a market capitalization-based weighting system and still includes some stocks from non-technology sectors. As a result, QQQ's movement is highly dependent on a handful of technology giants with the largest market capitalization. Although XNTK's scheme offers greater potential gains from the rising AI trend, it also carries the consequence of higher volatility, as seen in the deep market correction in 2022.

The characteristics of these two ETFs provide clear options for market players. For investors seeking pure technology exposure with a high risk tolerance, XNTK is an attractive option. Meanwhile, for those prioritizing stability, lower management fees, and more moderate portfolio diversification, QQQ remains a more rational investment choice amid global monetary policy uncertainty.
