The Indonesian government is currently exploring a strategic technology partnership with India, specifically in mastering rare earth element refining techniques. This effort is being carried out as a concrete step by the government towards the downstream processing of high-value minerals, while also paving the way for the development of the magnet industry in the country.
Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, revealed that this collaboration involves Indian technology company Midwest, in close coordination with Perminas and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). According to him, technical teams from both institutions have visited India to study the country's material separation technology capabilities.
"India possesses technological advantages in rare earth refining and offers technical support for building an independent magnet industry in Indonesia," Brian said at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday (7/7).
Rare earth elements are a vital component in modern industrial ecosystems, ranging from electric vehicles and renewable energy to electronic devices and defense technology. So far, Indonesia has been striving to increase the added value of these minerals so as not to merely export raw materials.
Although details regarding the cooperation scheme and factory location are still under intensive discussion, the government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that this downstream process takes place domestically. By mastering processing and refining technology, Indonesia is expected to become a key player in the supply chain for high-tech component industries in the future.
