The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) confirmed that Mount Semeru remains at Level III (Alert) status. This decision follows an increase in volcanic activity intensively monitored by relevant authorities.
On Friday (19/6/2026) morning, Mount Semeru spewed an ash column 1,000 meters high heading north and northwest. This phenomenon was followed by pyroclastic flows traveling 4.5 kilometers toward Besuk Kobokan, requiring extra vigilance from nearby residents.
The Executive Head of Lumajang Regency BPBD, Isnugroho, urged the public to remain calm and rely only on official information. He emphasized that the Alert status does not mean the entire Lumajang area is unsafe, but rather limits activities to designated zones based on technical studies.
Based on PVMBG recommendations, activities are strictly prohibited within a 13-kilometer radius in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan. Additionally, activities are banned within 500 meters of riverbanks originating from Semeru's peak to anticipate cold lava flows and the expansion of pyroclastic flows.
The local government continues to strengthen coordination with various parties to ensure optimal disaster mitigation. The public is asked to remain alert to weather changes at the summit that could heighten danger risks, and to strictly follow established safety protocols.
