The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (Balai Besar TNBTS) has officially issued an instruction for the temporary closure of all Mount Semeru hiking trails. This policy takes effect from August 7 to August 18, 2026, as a sign of respect for the sacred series of ceremonies during the Yadnya Karo Traditional Holiday held by the Tengger Tribe community in Ranupani Village.
Head of the TNBTS Authority, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, explained that the decision was made after considering an official request from the Ranupani Village Government. This step is crucial to maintain the solemnity of the ritual and ensure safety and order during the ceremonial procession, in accordance with the agreement of local traditional elders.
The park management has set a deadline for hikers to clear the trails before the closure takes effect. All hikers are required to have descended back to the Ranupani point no later than Friday, August 7, 2026, at 16:00 WIB. Hiking trails will reopen for public access on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Although hiking to the peak is closed, TNBTS clarified that tourism activities in the buffer area, including camping in the Ranu Regulo area, remain operating normally. This policy is expected to maintain area stability while accommodating the needs of local residents in conducting their annual tradition.
For prospective hikers affected by this policy, especially those who had previously rescheduled due to volcanic activity, the management provides a further rescheduling facility.
