Students from the Physiotherapy and Pharmacist professional education programs at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) synergized with the Gatak Community Health Center (Puskesmas Gatak) and BPJS Kesehatan in driving the Chronic Disease Management Program (PROLANIS). The activity, which took place in Gatak District, Sukoharjo Regency, targeted around 50 elderly participants who routinely monitor health conditions related to hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
The supervising lecturer of the activity, Farid Rahman, explained that the presence of the students is a tangible implementation of practical learning and community service. The main focus of this program is not merely curative action, but rather a promotive and preventive approach through regular monitoring, health education, and assistance in physical activities tailored to the body capacity of the elderly.
During the 45-minute gymnastics session, Physiotherapy students played a crucial role in maintaining the safety and balance of the participants. This assistance was considered highly helpful for the participants in undergoing the range of movements from warm-up to cool-down optimally, which is medically beneficial for increasing insulin sensitivity and blood pressure stability.
In addition to physical activity, the students also provided in-depth counseling regarding medication adherence and a healthy diet. Based on participant testimonials, this program has proven effective in helping them maintain health stability, although challenges such as mobility and fluctuating attendance rates remain evaluation points for the organizers in the future.
