Garut Regency now has a new culinary destination that combines the deliciousness of traditional snacks with the natural beauty of Priangan. Located on Jalan Ibrahim Adjie, Tarogong Kaler District, the Surabi Bakar Berlian eatery offers the sensation of eating warm surabi while enjoying the majestic panorama of Mount Guntur and lush green rice fields.
Founded by Yopi Herdiana, this culinary business was born out of a concern for preserving traditional Sundanese food amidst the onslaught of modern cuisine. Yopi explained that Sundanese surabi has unique characteristics that distinguish it from surabi of other regions, namely its thicker and denser texture, served with a variety of savory or sweet topping options.
From initially offering only three classic variants—plain, oncom, and egg—the eatery has now innovated by providing around 40 flavor variants to attract the interest of the younger generation and tourists. Although modern menus like matcha and cheese are quite popular among Gen Z consumers, traditional variants such as surabi kinca, plain, and oncom remain the best-selling items.
The uniqueness of Surabi Bakar Berlian's flavor lies in the consistency of its traditional processing method. Roni Sukmawan, the eatery's manager, revealed that the surabi batter is mixed with freshly grated coconut with a slightly coarse texture to produce a natural savory taste, before finally being baked using traditional wood-fired stoves.
Since moving to a new location about four months ago, the eatery's popularity has soared sharply thanks to organic promotion on social media. On weekends, sales can reach up to 1,000 portions per day with friendly prices ranging from Rp4,000 to Rp15,000. Around 70 percent of morning visitors are tourists from outside the region, such as Jakarta, Bandung, and Sumatra, who make this place a stopover before heading to the Mount Papandayan tourist area or Darajat Pass.
This success has prompted plans for business expansion to other cities such as Tasikmalaya and Jakarta, as well as the ambition to make surabi an iconic souvenir of Garut in the form of frozen food. For people who want to visit, this eatery operates daily in two sessions, namely morning at 06:00–10:00 WIB and evening to night at 17:00–22:00 WIB.
