The world boxing governing body, World Boxing, has officially lifted sanctions against Russian boxers. This decision restores the right of Russian athletes to compete under their national flag and play their national anthem in various international championships.
This strategic policy was agreed upon by the World Boxing Executive Committee during a coordination meeting discussing the main competition agenda for the 2027–2029 period. This agenda also includes preparations for the qualification phase leading to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The association emphasized that Russian boxers now have equal competition rights as athletes from other national federations.
Previously, athletes from Russia and Belarus were banned from participating in various global sports events following the geopolitical conflict in Ukraine since early 2022. Although they were initially only allowed to compete under neutral status, a breath of fresh air blew for Russia after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) eased restrictions and lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee in July 2026.
Despite giving the green light, World Boxing emphasized its commitment to closely monitor the Russian contingent. This oversight includes compliance with the code of conduct during tournaments and the strict implementation of anti-doping protocols for the entire delegation.
Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev enthusiastically welcomed this historic decision. He expressed his joy that Russian boxers of all age groups can now once again bring honor to their country with their full national identity on the international stage.
