The largest economic data collection program organized by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the 2026 Economic Census (SE2026), is currently underway across Indonesia from June 15 to August 31, 2026. Despite being a crucial agenda to map the current economic structure, the program still faces challenges regarding public perception and concerns over data security.
In various regions, field officers often encounter obstacles due to residents' reluctance to provide information. This is triggered by the proliferation of hoaxes on social media regarding fake census officers. Responding to this phenomenon, BPS emphasized that official officers always wear neat uniforms, complete with vests, carry duty letters, and identification cards with a QR Code for verification.
This census holds particular urgency, given that Indonesia has experienced massive shifts in economic patterns over the past decade. SE2026 is the first census to deeply capture the gig economy, digital economy, and creative industry players who do not have physical offices. The collected data will serve as an evidence base (evidence-based policy) for the government in formulating policies relevant to current field conditions.
Economic experts assess that public participation in providing honest answers is a tangible contribution to national development. Accurate data will minimize assumptive policies, while helping MSMEs gain access to more tailored financing. If the presented data is invalid, it is akin to "turning off the lights," which could misguide the future direction of national economic policy.
To guarantee data accuracy, BPS is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technology to classify business activities according to KBLI codes. Any anomaly in the incoming data will be re-verified to ensure the consistency and veracity of the information. With full support from the public and business players, the results of this census are expected to serve as an accurate compass for the government and investors in driving the national economy forward.
