Permata Bank Chief Economist Josua Pardede submitted a strategic proposal regarding the implementation of a B50 biodiesel mandate as a vital instrument in maintaining Indonesia's macroeconomic stability. Amid the challenges of crude oil import dependency that continuously depletes foreign exchange reserves, this policy is projected to be a sustainable solution to improve the national trade balance.
The proposal, introduced in early July 2026, offers a mechanism to substitute 50 percent of conventional diesel consumption with biofuel based on palm oil and used cooking oil. Unlike other energy policies, the implementation of B50 is claimed to add no burden to the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN), making it a highly attractive option amid the government's current fiscal pressures.
From a macroeconomic perspective, this policy is expected to generate a multiplier effect on downstream sectors such as transportation and logistics. By reducing dependency on crude oil imports, the rupiah's exchange rate position is expected to be better safeguarded against global market volatility, while providing leeway for the government to focus on digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence investments.
Furthermore, the proposal highlights the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in monitoring the entire biodiesel supply chain. From quality control at the upstream level to distribution optimization using predictive analytics, AI technology will minimize waste while ensuring high efficiency. This move is seen as aligned with the digital transformation currently being driven across various sectors in Indonesia.
Despite its immense potential, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa now faces a crucial challenge in evaluating the B50 implementation. The government needs to consider the technical readiness of diesel engines in the industrial sector, transition dynamics for imported oil producers, and a strict quality control system. If successfully executed with solid cross-sectoral coordination, B50 has the potential to become a foundation for a green economy that strengthens national competitiveness in the digital era.
