A video post showing piles of trash scattered in the Suryakencana Square area of Mount Gede Pangrango has gone viral on social media. This irresponsible action by some hikers who littered has triggered concern as it is deemed to damage environmental sustainability and the beauty of the conservation area.
A hiker from Bogor, Latif (23), shared his experience during a hike on July 19, 2026. He confirmed that the savanna was littered with various inorganic waste, ranging from styrofoam, plastic bottles, food wrappers, to broken phone chargers.
In addition to the piles of trash also found along the hiking trail, Latif revealed the existence of campfire remnants near the camping area. This dirty environmental condition disrupts the natural aesthetics, and even hinders tourists who want to enjoy the beauty of the edelweiss flowers growing in the area.
Responding to the complaints, the Public Relations of the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park Authority (BBTNGGP), Agus Deni, emphasized that they would take immediate action. BBTNGGP plans to schedule a mass clean-up operation in Suryakencana Square involving officers, partners, and volunteers.
Agus also urged all hikers to be smart and responsible visitors by not littering. In addition, he reminded hikers to comply with the ban on lighting campfires to prevent potential forest fires in the Mount Gede Pangrango area.
