The Hasanuddin HM Sports Hall (GOR) in Banjarmasin witnessed the enthusiasm of dozens of young swimmers competing in the Mayor's Cup 2026 Swimming Championship on Monday (06/07/26). This competition serves as a stage for athletes from various clubs and schools to showcase their abilities in the 50-meter freestyle and breaststroke events.
This year's event places a significant focus on nurturing young athletes. The organizing committee representative, Djuhriannor, revealed that of the 70 registered participants, approximately 70 percent are elementary school students. This step was taken as a long-term strategy to cultivate promising talents prepared for higher levels of achievement in the future.
There are four age categories contested, ranging from grade one to three elementary school students, grade four to six elementary school students, up to junior and senior high school levels. In addition to chasing podium finishes, this championship is designed to hone the competitive mentality of the participants. Malikah, one of the swimmers from the Pattimura Swimming Club, felt that the experience of competing directly provided a valuable and challenging sensation for developing her technique.
Echoing Malikah's sentiments, young swimmer from the Pelindo III Club, Azelia Putri Yunarto, admitted that her involvement in swimming grew from a hobby into a serious discipline. She is committed to continuing to train to achieve maximum results in future competitions.
Overall, the Mayor's Cup 2026 aims not only to find winners but also to serve as an important instrument in fostering a culture of sportsmanship and interest in swimming among Banjarmasin's youth from an early age.
