The Indonesian government has officially integrated large-scale irrigation infrastructure with cutting-edge agricultural technology to strengthen national food security. This step is marked by the inauguration of five new dams, including the Meninting Dam in West Lombok, which is expected to serve as a catalyst for significantly increasing paddy field productivity.
President Prabowo Subianto emphasized during his working visit that the presence of dams must have a direct impact on farmers' welfare. According to him, impounded water must be distributed effectively to the rice fields, given the crucial role of farmers as the main pillar of the nation's food sovereignty. The President also highlighted the importance of budget efficiency, including utilizing funds from energy-saving programs to continue replicating similar irrigation construction projects in various regions.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture introduced the Modern Advanced Agricultural System (PM-AAS) to maximize the function of these dams. Through the use of superior seeds, precision mechanization, and tight cropping pattern adjustments, this system is projected to increase crop yields by up to five tons per hectare. Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman is optimistic that the collaboration between a reliable water supply and technology adoption will reduce production costs while boosting farmers' real income.
In West Nusa Tenggara itself, the presence of the Meninting Dam is predicted to transform the agricultural landscape by increasing the cropping index from 280 percent to 300 percent. This allows farmers to plant more frequently throughout the year.
This grand strategy is expected to not only break dependence on external food supplies but also position Indonesia as a key player in global food exports. Through intensive guidance from agricultural extension workers, the government is committed to ensuring that every piece of infrastructure built can be converted into sustainable economic welfare improvements for rural communities.
