The increased volcanic activity status of Mount Anak Krakatau to Level III (Alert) raised public concern, particularly among sea transport users in the Sunda Strait route. However, the Class IV Bakauheni Harbormaster and Port Authority (KSOP) emphasized that as of Sunday (5/7/2026), ferry crossing activities between Bakauheni and Merak in both directions remain conducive.
Head of Class IV Bakauheni KSOP, Suratno, stated that ship movements have not been affected by the volcanic activity. To date, 28 vessels continue to operate normally across seven available piers at Bakauheni Port. He urged the public to remain calm and rely solely on official information from government authorities regarding the latest situation.
To ensure maritime safety, Bakauheni KSOP continues to conduct intensive periodic monitoring, both through the observation post on Sebesi Island and in close coordination with the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). This mitigation measure serves as the primary basis for determining operational policy in the field.
As an early precaution, port authorities have issued a notice to all ship captains crossing the Sunda Strait. Mariners are requested to increase vigilance regarding potential eruptions, volcanic ash dispersion, and navigation disruptions. Furthermore, all vessels are strictly prohibited from crossing or approaching the crater of Mount Anak Krakatau within a five-kilometer radius, in accordance with safety recommendations from relevant agencies.
