Nuclear medicine has now become the spearhead of the modern medical paradigm in Indonesia. By utilizing radiopharmaceuticals, doctors are able to detect biological activity at the cellular level, enabling disease diagnosis to be carried out much earlier and with higher precision than conventional methods. This approach transforms healthcare management from being reactive to more predictive.

The urgency of developing this technology aligns with the rising rate of non-communicable diseases, particularly cancer. According to data from the Global Cancer Observatory in 2022, over 400,000 new cancer cases were recorded in Indonesia. Given that time is a crucial factor in therapeutic success, the ability of nuclear technology to detect cellular anomalies before organ damage occurs serves as a vital life-saving instrument.

Behind the effectiveness of these clinical services, Indonesia possesses a strong research infrastructure foundation through three nuclear reactors managed by BRIN. Facilities in Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Serpong allow Indonesia to independently produce medical radioisotopes. This step not only reduces reliance on global supply chains but also ensures the availability of medical raw materials with very short half-lives.

However, distribution challenges remain a significant concern. Currently, access to nuclear medicine services is still concentrated in ten provinces, creating access disparities for patients in remote areas. Logistics speed is a decisive factor, considering radioisotopes must be used shortly after production to maintain their clinical efficacy.

The government is currently accelerating healthcare transformation through a facility development roadmap until 2027, in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Its main focus includes strengthening medical personnel, quality assurance, and equalizing service networks. Solid integration among research, industry, and the clinical sector is expected to achieve a more resilient, equitable, and advanced technology-based healthcare system.
