Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait, precisely on the border of South Lampung and Banten regions, currently maintains its status at Level III or Alert. This status designation is based on intensive monitoring conducted by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the ongoing volcanic activity.
Deny Mardiono, an officer at the Mount Anak Krakatau Observation Post from the Geological Agency, explained that both visual and seismic activity of the volcano show dynamics that warrant vigilance. Based on observations conducted on Wednesday (8/7) between 12:00 and 18:00 WIB, steam emissions were observed from the active crater, reaching heights of 10 to 100 meters above the peak. The crater smoke appeared white with moderate to thick intensity and weak pressure.
In terms of seismicity, the seismogram recorded continuous tremor activity or microtremors. These vibrations are an important indicator of the movement of magma or fluids beneath the volcano's surface. The amplitude of the tremor vibrations was recorded in the range of 1 to 15 millimeters, with a dominant amplitude value of 5 millimeters.
Although meteorological conditions around the area of the 157-meter-above-sea-level (asl) volcano tend to be sunny and cloudy, relevant authorities still urge the public to increase vigilance. All parties are asked to continue following directives from authoritative institutions to minimize potential risks arising from the volcanic activity.
